What Is a Karmic Relationship? Meaning, Signs, and How It Differs from Twin Flames

Updated: Oct 7, 2025

What in the world is a karmic relationship and what purpose does it serve?

If you've already read my posts about twin flames and the difference between twin flames and soulmates, you might have noticed a brief reference to karmic connections.

Many times people confused twin flames and karmics because both evoke intense emotions, as they are triggering core wounds that are meant to be dealt with. The key distinctions between the two are 1) twin flames share the same soul core and karmics do not, and 2) once the karmic lesson (often times brought in from previous lifetimes) has been learned, the karmic contract is complete and the two parties can separate and have no more to do with the other.

Both twin flame and karmic relationships can start with intense attraction and emotion, and both can veer into the land of toxicity, especially if both parties aren't doing the work of healing.

As in any relationship, one can only focus on one's own growth and healing, and you will be able to see whether your connection with another person is karmic or a twin flame connection only once you begin the work on healing yourself.

In a twin flame connection, the healing of one flame will cause healing in the other. It will also spur a spiritual awakening in the two parties. However, in a karmic connection, you will not see this same cause-effect reaction. In fact, you might see the opposite--as you heal, the toxicity of the other party becomes even more apparent. (That is what happened with my abuser, at least. I was undergoing therapy and using Tarot to strengthen my intuition, and I even invited him to learn Tarot and encouraged him to do therapy, too, but the result was the same toxicity now cloaked in therapeutic language, not healing or any increased self-awareness. And given his continued attacks on me throughout the divorce proceedings, it is clear there been no spiritual or emotional growth since our separation, either. Hence...he is DEFINITELY a karmic!)

Although I am sad that I spent so long in that toxic marriage, the truth is, any relationship is serving a purpose--to help us grow into the best version of ourselves. Sometimes this is done through positive and peaceful experiences, but, unfortunately, most of us seem to learn best from negative experiences. And it was clear that I had some generational trauma to overcome. And I've come away from that relationship scarred, but purified through the flames I passed through. So for the growth is has triggered, I give thanks.

Nevertheless, whether you think you are in a twin flame or soulmate or karmic connection, you NEVER HAVE TO ACCEPT ABUSE IN ANY FORM. In fact, consider it part of your soul's journey to find a way out.

(Although some religious traditions seem to exalt suffering, it is my fervent belief that the Universe/God/Source/Spirit does NOT see suffering as anything more than a catalyst for transformation. It might be part of the journey, but it is NEVER intended to be the destination.)
